PLEASE READ this Xylitol warning from one of our customers. I was telling your husband when we were there 3 weeks ago how we had gotten our first pug from you guys back in Feb 2005, well this holiday season we went through a horrible tragedy. While we were in TX visiting my family, our totally healthy pug snuck into a room at my in-laws house and got (ate) into Ice Breakers Ice Cube gum which is sugar-free and contains the artificial sweetener Xylitol. Well, little did we know that Xylitol is very toxic/deadly to dogs. It causes rapid insulin release in which their sugar blood levels drop quickly, and it leads to liver failure depending on how much is consumed and my dog ate 39 out of the 40 pieces so she was well over 100% of the toxicity level. So after 9 days of our pug fighting for her life, and over 6K in vet bills, she died of liver and kidney failure. It was the most heartbreaking experience of our lives, and hope this never happens to anyone. Even 2 pieces of gum is enough to kill a dog. And as we both know how pugs are, they love food and will get into anything. |
